OPPORTUNITIES FOR CLUB MEMBERS

Part of being a member of a Club is helping out.  Whether that's on the airfield hangar packing, retrieving gliders, flying tugs, doing the log keeping, instructing, etc. all help is appreciated.  Additionally we have the need for expertise in certain areas (e.g. we recently established a marketing team that needed people who knew something about the subject).  We have projects that range from needing specialist knowledge through to simply having people to help move stuff around, paint things, clean gliders, or talk to members of the public.  Al of these activities help to benefit the Club and its operation and so helps the members.  So, how can you help ?

AREA

SUMMARY

InterClub League Team Captain

ADDED 24/03/07

Looking for somebody to act as Captain this year.  This will involve liaising with the other Clubs in the league, pulling together a team of members who'd like to participate and then giving them support and encouragement.  You can even fly in the comp yourself!  Contact Gary Nuttall if you'd like to take up the challenge.

Mentor Mentor

ADDED 18/11/06

Would you like to be a mentor within the club, even better would you like to take on the challenge of running the mentoring scheme ? ?  We’re looking for people at all levels to help fellow members to develop their potential.  Contact Jane Moore if you'd like to help.

Tug Pilots

We’ve been having some difficulty obtaining insurance cover for tug pilots aged over 70 years old. Much effort is being put into trying to overcome this problem as several of our regular tuggies are now over 70. We really value the help that they provide but until we can overcome this hurdle, we are left with the risk of being short of tuggies on occasion. If you can help, please contact the Club.

Trailer Park maintenance

Do you ever drive through the trailer park and think, bl**dy hell, I wish someone would fill these holes in ?  Well we need somebody to do just that. The only skills are people who know how to use a shovel and how to fill in holes.  Speak to any committee member if you’d be willing to volunteer.  This will probably work best if we can have somebody who knows what they’re doing and can press-gang motivate other members to help.

Adopt a glider / trailer

We need members who are willing to help maintain and look after gliders above and beyond basic maintenance.  For example, minor cosmetic repairs, sorting out instruments, making sure the rigging kit works, etc.  The trailers also need to be checked, made roadworthy, kept clean, plus tow out gear, rigging aids, trailer cleanliness, etc. bits need to be repaired/maintained/replaced.  All of these things need to be done to make sure that our fleet is operational, tidy and that retrieves are kept simple.  Anybody who has used a club glider to go cross-country should be willing to spend even just a few hours over the Winter to help make sure that the kit is in good condition for when the cross-country season gets underway.  Contact Jane Moore if you'd like to help.

GENERAL

The club is run for the members by the members.  The committee is always keen to hear from people willing to help the Club in whatever way that might be.  If you have a great idea, then let us know.  You can speak to any committee member.  Contact details are posted on the notice board in the clubhouse.  More important than ideas though, we’re particularly seeking help from those who can put the time and effort in to make things happen.

Regionals Helpers

* REQUIREMENT FILLED * - Thanks to everybody who helped out

We're hosting the Booker Regionals 11th - 19th August.  This year's Competition Director Jim While is looking for people to help - we need planners, airfield helpers, launchpoint controllers, scorers, a met person and a host of other assistants.  Speak to Jim White if you'd like to help.

Aero Expo Helpers

* REQUIREMENT FILLED * - Well done to Jane Moore for co-ordinating a great team of volunteers

Building on our success at last year's event, we will use our free exhibition space to provide information on the wide range of possibilities which gliding offers - racing, cross country, wave, mountain flying, aerobatics, vintage - in order to sell courses and recruit new members. We will also, if space permits, rig a glider from our fleet.

This is YOUR opportunity to help YOUR club. We will need help both over the weekend and in the run up. The following is a sample of opportunities for you to join in:

a.. Help set up and/or take down the stand - fetching and carrying, or techie stuff with wiring
b.. Do a half day shift on the stand or with the parked glider
c.. Help with rigging/derigging in order to empty the hangar

If you are willing to help in any way, however small, contact Jane Moore on j.moore@virgin.net or 07990 760781 to discuss.

Cadet Scheme

* REQUIREMENT FILLED * - Well done to Bob Smith who has taken over

Each year Booker offers 10 young people from the local area the chance to learn to fly in return for undertaking various tasks necessary for running each day’s flying. Full details of the scheme are set out in a booklet available from the office. We need someone to take over supervising the cadet scheme. As we currently have a corps of cadets, the role would involve maintaining the roster, keeping in touch with the cadets to ensure that they attend and giving them support and feedback on how they are doing. At the start of next season there will be an opportunity to be involved in the recruitment and selection of a new corps. Training is available, there is a BGA seminar on child protection at Aston Down on 23 September.   For an informal discussion of the role, please contact Symeon Economou on 07791 982008.

Health and Safety

* REQUIREMENT FILLED * - Thanks to Dave Bundock who is taking over but will need support of the members

There is an opportunity for a member to take on the vital task of ensuring that our operation poses no unnecessary risks to members, staff and the public. Experience is not essential. If interested, please contact the office.

Club Secretary

FILLED - Welcome to John Spencer

We need somebody willing to take on the position of Company Secretary.  This doesn't actually mean writing lots of letters but simply to ensure that we fill and submit our annual returns and comply with any company legislation and any formal correspondence.

Buggy Maintenance

FILLED - Thanks to Guy Sutherland

We operate two golf buggies on the airfield which are used to retrieve gliders.  They occasionally need some tender loving care (or at least the oil changing and the air filter checking).  Would you be willing to help look after them ?

If you would like to help with any of the above then please let us know.  Contact the person identified or speak to any member of the committee.
