INFORMATION SHEET August 2001

From the Committee

The next significant event on the calendar is the 15m National at the end of August.

You may recall that we had to move the dates for this event owing to the Foot and Mouth problem, and this has resulted in a much smaller number of entries than expected.

We intend to take advantage of the spare capacity by running, alongside the Nationals, another members’ task week. You will be able to fly the Nationals task or a smaller task for less experienced pilots/lower performance gliders. Entry will be free.

MEMBERS’ TASK WEEK - 25TH AUGUST - 2ND SEPTEMBER

Reciprocal Membership has been agreed between Booker and Lasham giving rights to fly without paying temporary membership on 14 days/calendar year to each flying member. You may be asked to produce a credit card prior to any flight to ensure payment of any monies due.

From the CFI

The comp is coming! As entry numbers are low this year (due to the date change) there is an opportunity for anyone with a rating higher than 250 to make a late entry to the 15m Nationals. Tempted? Could be fun.

At the same time we will be running another task week a chance to fly alongside some of the country’s best pilots. Nine days of good, competitive cross country flying. Don’t miss it!

Now is also the time to commit to coming to Aboyne in the autumn. We always see the same people on the expedition so if you have not been before, make the effort. When the weather is good it’s fantastic and challenging flying, and if the weather is bad we’ve got great accommodation, food, drink and congenial company. Worth a week of your time to find out. Information from me or Dave Richardson if you are interested.

Finally, you will notice that the hole in the 25 landing area has at last been levelled. It will be some time however, until the ground is useable and until then we are stuck with an even larger obstruction to work around. If in doubt land long.

ABOYNE 2001

We will be visiting Aboyne again this August for three weeks.

September 23rd until October 13th inclusive

Aboyne is the best, most reliable wave site in the UK, especially around the autumn equinox. Any west in the wind gives good wave soaring and locally excellent weather.

If the air is unstable the mountains give terrific thermal soaring, cloud bases of 5500’ over the mountains is not unusual.

So if you fancy a week in Scotland in autumn, near Balmoral in the Dee Valley, staying in an old Norwegian log cabin, with some of the best soaring possibilities in the UK BOOK NOW.

You will need a tow bar on your car as we have to get the gliders from here to Scotland. Contact me or Dave Byass for further info. Ring the office to book, a £50.00 deposit will be payable.
