| From the CFI Battery Charging If you are taking a glider out of the hangar, put a battery in it! The BGA insists that two seat gliders are fitted with audio variometers and therefore a battery would be useful. As for single seat club gliders – when you have finished flying, put the battery on charge. If the office is shut put it on charge in the hangar. If the hangar is shut then use the key …. Please don’t leave flat batteries for the next user. Especially the Pegasus, which has a unique battery configuration Tug Pilots G Leaving Club Gliders out Overnight It seems that some of our newer members are unaware of the procedure of taping up the pitot, statics and brunswicks of club gliders left overnight in the trailer park. Recently a Junior pilot (Junior glider that is) asked me to check out the reason for the airspeed indicator not working in the glider he had just landed. When I examined it, it was still taped up from the night before! Two pilots had DI’d it and did not realise the significance of the bright blue tape across the nose pitot and brunswick tube. It was not the fault of these pilots – it was simply that nobody had ever told them. Fortunately, the pilot concerned did all the right things and added extra speed and landed long into the field – but imagine a too-slow turn onto finals – or even a too-fast landing across the 24 taxiway (or hedge!). When parking gliders out in the evening, please first CHECK with an instructor if this is OK, and if you don’t know the procedure then ASK. Nobody will mind telling you. Finally when you tape up the various orifices to prevent damp, dew or bug ingress, please place some tape ACROSS the dial of the ASI to remind the next pilot to check for tape on the OUTSIDE. Alan Smith Aboyne Visit 2003 September 28th – October 18 inclusive There are a few spaces left on this years Aboyne visit. We will be taking at least one K21 and 2 Pegasus with 3 instructors, so any level of flying experience could take part, even pre-solo pilots. Aboyne is in Royal Deeside, between Braemar and Aberdeen off the eastern side of the Cairngorns, providing good wave in any wind direction from North through West to South Easterly. There is a North West facing ridge and excellent thermals with cloud bases upto 5000+ over the mountains even in Autumn. Accommodation is in a 10 bed log cabin in the mountains or numerous good hotels and B&B’s. A tow bar on your car is useful. If you would like to come along, put your name on the list in the office, contact me with any queries at the club .David Richardson From the Office We can now send your monthly statement and newsletter by email, if you wish to switch to this system please contact the office with your email address. CFI’s Final Turn As you know I am finishing my term as CFI in mid October and leaving for the NZ season soon after. My thanks to everyone who has helped me out over the last few years. It’s (mostly!) been fun. I am not giving up instructing and hope to be around next season coaching those with cross country, competition or instructing ambitions, so stay in touch! If any club member wishes to contact me during the winter I will be available on the email – gdale247@hotmail.com G |
